There didn’t seem to be another verse coming, so she risked the question. “Did I hear something about taking someone’s virginity?” He didn’t stop playing, even though the song was long over. “Whatever gave you that impression, fair lady?” “Just, you as a person.” He kicked her shin, she kicked back, he raised his guitar above the leg battlefield to keep it out of harm’s way and fell off-balance. They laughed, like they were kids trapped in a fruit crate again, so loud and careless that they nearly didn’t hear the stifled giggle around the corner. End excerpt.

Savage? “Desperate.” Well, she didn’t know if any of that sympathy was deserved, but it occurred to her then that most, if not all, of the wolves they had just fought might be people Manel knew and lived with. From the aisle, he looked like he was giving mass, albeit to an audience of dust and shadows. “I’m afraid I don’t follow.” Of course he wouldn’t. He wasn’t used to having to pack up and go after staying for too long in one place, before people started calling the guards and grabbing the pitchforks.
