A spot of the false skin over my real flesh is shorting. The lilac lines of my parasite glow through the smudges of blood, right there in the voiddamned daylight for anyone at all to see. “Breathe, Ashley,” Envy says in my earpiece. “No one can see you right now.” I look around anyway. The pod’s mostly dark, save for a bit of a spotlight through a tinted window and red emergency lights tinting everything crimson. It’s empty, except for — I nearly jump out of my fucking skin at seeing the voiddamned petran not four feet away from me. I’d forgotten he was there. Envy’s right. He’s not looking. No one else around.
