We threw a big challenge to 9 experts on nuclear power and asked them to answer in 200 words whether the Europeans can built their own independent extended nuclear deterrent - their collective insights are worth the detour!

This is the real test for Euro strategic autonomy: can Euros continue to arm and support Ukraine’s military regardless of what the US and Russia say?

No intl law or rule prevents them. Its support for sovereignty and territorial integrity, as UN Charter Art 51 allows.

Putin is effectively setting the conditions.

And he rejected even the limited air and sea truce that Macron/Starmer/Zelensky had suggested as a stepping stone.

Clear from readout for Trump focal points are:
- Iran
- bilat rship w/Russia, “upside” and eco opportunities

Interesting Trump decided to threaten highest tariffs on FR alcohol before GER cars.

There’s no substitute for FR Champagne, it’s a geographically protected designation. Americans can enjoy “sparkling wine” but it doesn’t have the same ring to it.

Perhaps Macron shld simply respond “salud!”

There are legitimate questions over whether the Trump administration is indeed on the side of Ukraine.

If one’s not in the manifestation business, one needs to allow for that possibility.

Case in point below from John.

A smart move by Macron to invite Trump to the reopening of Notre-Dame before he is even inaugurated.
And Trump accepting the invitation is certainly an interesting move.

This could potentially establish a privileged channel with Paris. A potentially interesting move.
While Macron worked hard during Trump I to establish as productive a rship as possible, despite the usual US frustrations with France.

Macron heads to Riyadh tomorrow

Major - Massad Boulos worked hard on mobilizing support for Trump esp with the determining Arab-American vote in Michigan.

And, to put it bluntly : he will have to try really hard to be as bad as Hochstein.

This warning is, in theory, also addressed to KSA, UAE, Egypt among others.

Interesting that Trump is being this explicit and public abt a concern I've heard from Western officials in private for the past, at least, 2 years.

Crucially, will Trump work with the Euros on this?

Hedging, transactionality, keeping as many options as possible is only option for many middle powers. Question is: how long can uneasy equilibria hold.

KSA trying to boost both its rships with Iran and US- and suspect there’ll be opening for likes of France, others

Important signal from Lebanese Armed Forces: “started deploying south of Litani in coordination w/UNIFIL in support of Leb govt’s commitment to implement UNSCR 1701”

Photos show units moving from Beirut southward. Crucial to also reassure Leb population fearing Hezb and Israel

The Israeli military opened fire on a group of journalists in the Lebanese southern town of Khiam - that the Israelis invaded and where they remain - and wounded an AP photographer as well as the Sputnik correspondent.

And this is just the first day of the ceasefire.
November 27, 2024 at 3:20 PM
Meanwhile the Israeli army seems to think they have the same occupying powers in southern Lebanon as they exercise in Gaza : they just announced that ppl won’t be allowed to travel across the Litani River in both directions from 5pm to 7am local - basically imposing a curfew.

Where @barakravid.bsky.social unnamed US official was right days ago, despite Elysée denials, is that France clearly committed to publicly backtracking on the ICC Netanyahu/Gallant arrest warrants.

And it just did with this statement from its foreign ministry, in French and English.
November 27, 2024 at 12:17 PM
On this from the always well-informed @barakravid.bsky.social

Hochstein seems a little obsessed w/vilifying France.

There’s a legit non-Israel centric view: Lebanon wants 🇫🇷 in oversight mech to balance out US Israeli bias

Giving 🇮🇱a warring party enforcer not recipe for stability or security.
