Anesthesiologists self-report how long the surgery took and get paid based on that and there is evidence that some significantly upcode. Anthems solution would simply not reward that behavior jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

I've been very vocal about the anthem thing though because I feel like it's a case of the AMA and ASA pushing a narrative of "oh they are not going to pay _so you will have to_" which is inaccurate

Ya that's pretty awful. I work in p&c insurance and between hurricanes, fires and healthcare costs that whole industry is also in a lot of trouble.

Of course ama and aha and American society of anesthesiologists sued the bill right out the door. litigationtracker.law.georgetown.edu/litigation/a...

Hope all went well. Know your rights. Balance billing and surprise billing are illegal www.mayoclinic.org/billing-insu...

What anthem did would not mean that pt has to eat the cost. It means the institution (or physician?) has to eat the cost.
No Surprises Act
The No Surprises Act includes many provisions to help protect consumers from surprise bills beginning January 1, 2022.

They cannot. Balance billing is illegal. They are mad because it comes out of their pockets. Insurance has to rely on self-reported times and there is evidence some doctors significantly upcode that.

If we restrict the finance people, the good ones will leave and entire economies have collapsed when bad finance bros take over.
Ooo this is fun!

It feels like the AAA or AMA or wherever just did a fantastic job of pretending the patients are the ones that have to foot the bill and thereby generating outrage.

I don't know how much choice the provider has but I'd imagine you have to deal with whoever is at the hospital so selection shouldn't be a huge problem.
December 6, 2024 at 11:45 AM
We rely on self-reported times. That gives pretty direct incentives to upcode and there is good evidence that is happening (jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...) seems like the current system rewards the dishonest docs and the anthem proposed plan would not.

Is that an accurate statement? Wouldn't that be balance billing if the hospital is in network?

e.g. GPS would matter far less for me if I had my leg blown out. I respect those people's conclusion. Just because there are people for whom existence of US has been a huge net negative doesn't mean that's the case for most people.

Well, you are not from Ukraine for example. Look, I was born and (partly) raised in an oil rich middle eastern country so I get some of what you are saying. In my experience when I look at things the above is my assessments. No doubt there are people who won't come to that conclusion.

I'd certainly consider that a positive contribution from USSR/Stalin. Don't you?

Oh God! hornet's nest with this one! No use arguing with people that post every other min. For now, I'll tolerate arguments + ad hominem attacks but posters with only ad hominem attacks will be blocked. Makes for a better world for both of us!

The point is not that the US has not done bad things but US institutions have provided great foundation for art /science/tech to prosper and that has benefited the world tremendously. Could it have done that w/ better foreign policy? Almost certainly. But when all said US is a big + in the world IMO

So long as our attitude is that we are a dying empire that'll be a self-fulfilling prophecy. America is great and we have achieved so much and done so much good. Are there shortcomings? Of course. Many. But Democrats best believe the first part if they want any chance.

I'd imagine there are other NAE members that have violated the CoC.
Of course there always ought to be a first one I just worry about making Elon the first one.

Anywho, I'm sure what we can agree on is that CoC should be adhered to uniformly and elon appears to be in violation of that.
