I remember Albert Bartlett warning us that exponential growth cannot go on forever. Vaclav Smil has said similar.

It feels ironic that most civilization collapses the “peasants” are there afterward and the elite is gone.

Ironically Davy Crockett was in favor of closing West Point when he was in Congress. He thought government should not pay to educate the rich sons of the planters (most of the cadets back then).

I would support the idea that the Holocaust was the first genocide that used industrial methods. The Khmer Rouge and Rwanda unfortunately show it is repeatable.

Ironic that’s where many Americans have bought property to obtain second passports.

I remember Willis Carto and his Spotlight on the News show. Now I am both concerned and feeling very old.

Also the post office is in the Constitution. I thought strict constructionists would be more supportive 🤔

Also Pres Obama expanded use of executive orders. Norms were cracking before Pres Trump.

Yes many designs out there. Let’s hope some get built.
May 2, 2025 at 11:50 PM
The Koreans, Japanese, and Russians continued to work on various advanced designs. Natural gas was very cheap for a long time and put nuclear on the back burner.

Yes Nixon killed a lot of research. We will see if China can develop better corrosion resistance. Oak Ridge used Hastelloy which is an expensive alloy used for the SNAP10A space reactor. Thorium is also harder to breed than U238.
May 2, 2025 at 11:28 PM
The thorium reactor is the molten salt design. The core is a fluid rather than solid. The US also gave them up since the fluid is corrosive and requires fancy alloys. Now that CO2 is a concern, alternative reactors are back again.

My father served in WWII and I recall taking him to an event honoring the code talkers. They were an important part of our history and deserve remembrance and commemoration.

There was a brand Thorets, but not sure they exist anymore.

I am tempted to read Ezra Klein’s book. Still it seems Gaya Herrington is right that we are getting close to real limits that would entail a different definition of “abundance”.

Speak to the public on our nation’s real needs instead of the Shakespearean tale of sound and fury we have heard so far.
