I'm at a work conference in DC and had some time yesterday to check out a few indie bookstores. I picked up Potomac Fever: Reflections on the Nation's River by Charlotte Taylor Fryar at Lost City Books.

It’s honestly so disrespectful and irresponsible that the national media has mostly ignored the DC33 city worker strike in Philly so far. It’s a huge story with massive implications for the 6th biggest city in the country.

Hell, I’ll write about it for ya! Email me! www.inquirer.com/politics/phi...
Philly is in its first municipal strike in the social media age. Does that affect how events are unfolding?
So far, the national press has largely ignored Philadelphia's first strike by city workers since 1986.

2025 Book #7: The Fatal Flying Affair (Lady Hardcastle Mysteries #7) by T.E. Kinsey

Rating: 4.25

This has been my go-to cozy mystery series since 2018. It follows the adventures of Lady Hardcastle and her maid Florence Armstrong in their not-so-sleepy English village.

I've seen folks talk about how "in four years" they'll be able to get back to their planned projects and I really don't think that's going to work out. People & projects losing funding now will not be able to hit pause and come back once funding is restored. Hard-won progress & capacity will be lost
I worry that not enough of a big deal is being made about how long-term the devastation of these budget cuts to our scientific and health agencies will be, beyond the absolute ruin they will cause in the acute period.

Don't go. Instead, go be with your constituents.
If you were in Congress, what would you do for the State of the Union? What do you think Dems should do?

Just a quick reminder/request to treat today as a BIG CHAIN-STORE blackout. Your favorite, locally-owned & run comic shop, cafe, bookshop, or record store (my own fav)? They’re on our side. And one day of no business can really sting. Keep ‘em busy.

2025 Book #4: What You Don't Know Will Make a Whole New World by Dorothy Lazard

Rating: 5/5

I really enjoyed reading this poignant coming-of-age memoir that showed what it was like growing up in the Bay Area as a young Black woman in the 60s and 70s.

Been thinking about civic engagement as a new parent. I came across the substack essay "The Childfree Are Ungovernable." In it, the author asserts that having kids is often "the end of radical sentiment and, in many ways, freedom itself." E.g., you can't risk your safety, you can't switch jobs, etc.

It is very easy to call your representatives’ offices. They have to log your calls and the call numbers are meaningful. You don’t even have to try to convince anyone; just call and tell them your concerns. They are there to represent you. Let them know what that means. www.usa.gov/elected-offi...

Just requested that the Oakland Library purchase this book!
I just received notice that my local library approved @simkern.bsky.social's "Genocide Bad: Notes on Palestine, Jewish History, and Collective Liberation" for purchase.

I implore others to do the same! Reference material regarding the ongoing genocide is essential for our libraries to carry. 🆓🇵🇸
