Neurobiologist, Professor, fond of reading, cats, thrillers, and food
From a trip to PNW and being reminded how beautiful this country is. My childhood was spent in a crowded and polluted city (much as I loved it). But the majestic splendor of the natural beauty in the US will never cease to amaze me. Hope we can sustain the national parks.

Finding comfort in little things these days. Working with a good group of people, discussing science, sharing ideas. Trying to tune the noise and chaos out in moments like this. Lab lunch.

Finding joy in little things-fluffy idlis (as close to my mother’s as I could make them), morning coffee, cats snoozing in the quiet hum of the house, and manuscript submitted this week.

No matter what I’m doing, this little guy likes to hang close. Left all the nooks and corners in the house to curl up on my work desk, occasionally giving me an admonishing look for working on a Sunday 😀

Neurotrophic Factors GRC 2025 complete. Felt good to focus on science with an awesome community for a few days, and shut out the nonsense outside. Newport RI is an amazing venue, makes up for the bunkbeds in dorms housing.

Congratulations to Xiangning Chen (co-mentored with Haiqing Zhao) and Joselyn S. Ramirez-Gutierrez who had their PhD hoodings this week. You keep hope alive in scientific curiosity and the pursuit of knowledge at a time when higher education and research are under attack. We wish you the very best!

Reminding myself that there are joys in life despite the challenges around us. Celebrating @samerhattar.bsky.social birthday in NYC at our favorite eating holes, Buena Vista Social Club, and just enjoying the humdrum of NYC

Love the intense spring showers in Baltimore. Reminds me of monsoons in India.

To add to the good news from the lab, congratulations to Xiangning Chen for defending her beautiful thesis work on the direct effects of light on glucose metabolism!! It’s been a pleasure for Haiqing, @samerhattar.bsky.social and I to mentor you. Thank you for allowing us to be part of your journey!

In the midst of the chaos, happy to find moments of celebration-congrats to Jieying Li, PhD student in the lab for being awarded the Ben Barres Junior Investigator Award for Scientific Excellence at the 2025 CSHL Brain Barriers Meeting. Way to go, Jieying!!

This week both @samerhattar.bsky.social and I ended up at home due to Covid. Finding joy in little things, resting, spending time with our cats in the middle of the day, working from home, and enjoying Residence on Netflix. Fully restored now, Covid negative and on to the next week!!

Cherry blossoms on my street in Baltimore-have to remind myself every day (these days) to enjoy the beauty in life

I have an empty wine bottle on my office shelf that says “First R01!! Feb 1 2007”. I never really paid attention to it until today and a wave of poignancy swept over for decades of steady NIH funding for our research on the sympathetic nervous system, for funding to train many students and postdocs

Snow specifically after the heat and humidity of India is welcome. But battling whatever one picks up during travel (a hacking cough, congestion) is rough when I’m ready to hit work in the the new year. Contrasting pictures of winter in my two worlds….
