Los Angeles County, 34N latitude, 8:30 pm PST (4:30 UTC Nov 12). Reminiscent of May 10, 2024!

Stony Ridge Observatory, Los Angeles County, 34N latitude. #Aurora kicked into overdrive around 8:30 pm PST (4:30 UTC). It was easily naked eye visible for about 1 hr as pink glow.

Not the prettiest view with all these clouds, but #Aurora is visible from Los Angeles county, 34N latitude.

Majestic scene in Angeles National Forest last night, lit only by the moon 🌕.

My latest astrophoto, Melotte-15 within the Heart Nebula, imaged last weekend from Stony Ridge Observatory. 1 hr integration 🔭 30” f/6.

Los Angeles peeps: Trans Pride in Long Beach tomorrow (Sunday 10/19) is looking for volunteers.

My telescope dome controller project is coming along nicely! Ready to install at Stony Ridge Observatory. I plan to post a parts list, STLs, & code when it’s done.

Magnificent Saturn! 🪐 Atmospheric seeing was as good as I’ve ever seen from this suburb of Los Angeles.

Last weekend, I took my kids up to Stony Ridge Observatory to check out Saturn, but the atmosphere wasn’t steady, so instead we tried our hand at hunting near-Earth objects (NEOs) and managed to confirm one! The MPC credits my 3 & 7-year-olds with co-discovering this guy:

Happy to see former colleagues at JPL working together toward a better future for the JPL workforce - the lifeblood of our planetary exploration programs (among other talents). 💪

I photographed dwarf planet Pluto last night at a distance of 4.3 billion km from Stony Ridge Observatory. We just passed opposition, the closest we’ll get to Pluto all year. At apparent magnitude 14, Pluto should be detectable with modest backyard telescopes and #Astrophotography equipment.

Stony Ridge Observatory lit up by 2nd-quarter Moon, and a screenshot of my imaging console, tracking comet 3I/ATLAS using NINA #astrophotography software. 🔭

Follow-up observations of interstellar comet C/2025-N1, a.k.a. 3I/ATLAS, made by Stony Ridge Observatory near Los Angeles on Aug 5, 2025, for the Minor Planet Center. 🔭

Emission nebulae Sh2-115 and Sh2-116 (lower right), imaged on Saturday night from Frazier Park, CA. Integrated 2 hrs with Hydrogen-alpha filter (red tones) through smoke from the #GiffordFire, 100 miles away, then shot 4 hrs of Oxygen-III (cyan) after the smoke cleared.

Slow zoom. With the galaxy rotated, NGC-7331 could almost be mistaken for the Andromeda galaxy. Looks more 3D in this orientation, with that dusty outer arm partially blocking the bulge of the galactic core behind it.

#Supernova #SN2025rbs observed in NGC-7331 last night from Stony Ridge Observatory. The supernova is the bright dot just above and slightly right of the core of the galaxy. 🔭

My best Jupiter capture, from Oct 2023. 30 minute time lapse featuring the Great Red Spot. Imaged with a Meade 14” Lx200 at f/20 from La Crescenta, CA.

#Aurora detected by @ucsandiego.bsky.social’s HPWREN cam near Santa Barbara (34.5N latitude) around 12:30 PDT (8:30 UTC) on Sunday 5/1/25. I suspect this would have been detectable down to the US southern border.
