I remember when I showed my mom "Casablanca," she knew it was some old romance film, but not that it was about two people giving up everything they want most in life in order to defeat the Nazis.

I think this week's panels are some of the best I've ever painted. Ziu gets lost and has to find her way in Enoch: The First City.

Read it on @globalcomix.com. It's been a minute -- hope it was worth the wait:

100%. Somehow still one of the best-looking games ever made, almost 30 years later.

(And they used the same tricks as KQ6, framing scenes with foreground layers, to add depth.)

I have the same weird thing! A frame from KQ6 is always in the back of my mind when I'm drawing interior panels, but for me it's the pawn shop.

I'm pretty sure King's Quest VI and The Curse of Monkey form about 80% of my personality.

Hey #portfolioday, I'm R.K. Ignazio, a comic writer and artist. I make "Enoch: The First City," an ancient adventure epic about a thief who rises up to take revenge against the wealthy rulers who've oppressed his people.

These guys still haven't learned from "Raiders." You need to see the heroes get punched! You need to think they might lose!

An insanely intricate cityscape montage is on the way, showcasing the different crowded neighborhoods around Enoch.

Enoch: The First City is a political fantasy adventure about a powerful ancient empire teetering on the edge of collapse. globalcomix.com/c/enoch-the-...

I'm back after a family-related hiatus, and Ziu is once again exploring the canyon metropolis in Enoch: The First City.

A rich, powerful kingdom with percolating political turmoil. What could possibly go wrong? globalcomix.com/c/enoch-the-...

There's another Indiana Jones shot that's every bit as cool.

For anyone who doubts the genius of Steven Spielberg, here's what a conversation in a James Bond movie looks like (For Your Eyes Only, 1981) vs. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981).

I'm especially proud of the fact that in this establishing shot of Enoch, you can literally trace the path that Azza will walk and climb in the following pages to reach Tutu’s villa. It's all there, and the buildings are all consistent.

I also imagined what infrastructure a city of this scale would need. I imagined an amphitheater with an atrium to line up, a banking district, playgrounds, courtyards, verandas, bamboo scaffolding, and a lift system to bring supplies down from the top of the canyon.

My biggest challenge was trying to make the city more organic, more chaotic, less like an artist locked to a perspective grid, while still highlighting the verticality of the scene. The splotchiness of the paint strokes does a lot of heavy lifting in that regard.

I looked at a lot of different references of cliff cities to draw this spread. Petra, Mesa Verde… and many of the bridges were based on the Puente Nuevo in Spain. As impossible as this city would be to build, I wanted it to be grounded in real-world plausibility.

It was important to show the scale of Enoch. My book is called “the first city,” so it's crucial that the city itself be a compelling reason to read. The characters are a kaleidoscopic mix of people from different backgrounds and classes, so the city needs to look like it can support that cast.
