By Tyler Cowen I am now, at the margin, more inclined to the view that what keeps many people on good behavior is simply inertia. They are oddly passive in their core inclinations, but will behave badly if given an easy opportunity. And since many of these people probably are not active independent malefactors on a regular basis, their sense of risk may not be entirely well developed. Thus they themselves may have been fairly naïve in their dealings with Epstein, not quite understanding that their invulnerability in everyday life might not carry over to all situations.

Best explanation for confusion I've seen

Trump on Tuesday, days before the latest strike: "We knocked off actually three boats not two, but you saw two." I've grown up seeing this one www.castles.nl/garinish-isl... every summer get beautifully surrounded by trees. I think they still keep the view facing out the bay clear, but now looking at it from the side is very much "trust me bro" (photo courtesy my dad earlier this year).

I didn't get the reference and had to google it. Then realised that for a very long time I haven't got the reference because there was a joke in _Friends_ about it so had to look that up. Only to find that the joke in Friends is about not getting the reference too 🌀

Yeah, looks like the peak is late afternoon/early evening (only a couple of days of data but it seems to be the pattern)
Chart of energy generation in the uk (energydashboard.co.uk/live). Two days of data. shows solar increasing to an early afternoon peak of about 15 gigawatts, dipping to nothing overnight. Wind is more variable but has peaks of about 5 gigawatts at about 19:00 with the dips in the early morning

An optimist isn’t necessarily a blithe, slightly sappy whistler in the dark of our time. To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness. What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places–and there are so many–where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction. And if we do act, in however small a way, we don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory.
