I think young researchers shouldn't turn down review invitations, especially from journals where they publish (or might want to publish in the future). It's OK to turn down review invitations from predatory journals.
Similarly, a modest amount of volunteering in academic societies is a good thing.

You have a good point, but the mainstream media in the US aren’t clearly labeling Trump’s actions as despotism. They’re normalizing Trump’s actions instead. That being the cases, it’s hard for the Dems to get traction for an anti-despotism campaign.

Sorry, no. This is completely untrue. The police in Japan are on-duty 24/7. And the Yakuza still exist in Japan but any-gang laws have substantially reduced their power.

Japan is more culturally homogeneous than the US, and immigrants are expected to learn Japanese to become citizens, but genetically Japanese are a mix of mainly people from all over East Asia with lots of folks from other places mixed in. 2/2
