I have done a version of a derby pie and coated the crust with melted chocolate before chilling and baking. I'll have to try cocoa powder!

I cut the corn syrup way back, and use mostly brown sugar. Also, lots of recipes don't call for vanilla. I use a bunch.

That's how I make mine. I add almost triple what the recipe calls for, and use more of the broken pieces to mix in with the filling, then top with a layer of intact halves, sometimes artfully arranged, sometimes not.

You also need to make your own crust, with butter, and be sure to include vanilla in the filling recipe. People who hate pecan pie love my pecan pie.
