i think those who havent done the hard yards of actual organising maybe dont realise that you dont get numbers by magic, building the numbers is almost the entirety of the work and it lives or dies on momentum. like it or not, everyone getting the shit beaten out of them by cops kills momentum dead

was just at an explicitly anti-nazi rally (particularly opposing platforming tommy robinson), and a lady walked through the middle of it giving us all the middle finger while holding up her star of david necklace. pretty sadly indicative of the current moment

to add - we had possibly the biggest left coalition this city has seen behind this blockade. we reached out and built ties with a tonne of other groups. we flyered and postered for weeks. arranged free buses to get people there from across the city. had a whole system of sms alerts. wasnt enough

im sure youve done enough work as an organiser to know that building enough support among enough people is the eternal challenge of all activism and what we spend 99% of our time and effort on over years. if you know of a magic wand that can be waved to get people to show up id love to hear it

at most we blocked the docks for a couple of hours, at the cost of so many of our best activists getting effectively neutralised and the blunting of the whole coalition. it was clear that in our current reality it just wasnt a winning tactic

the theory was short blockades to start and build numbers from brief success that we could do longer blockades with later. but frankly the police violence was so effective that we had the opposite result

after the violence of the first attempt, we got substantially less of the “softer” support from non-activists the second time – particularly (and very understandably) from the local muslim community groups who supported our first attempt but had much more to lose from being arrested

we did it a second time with the same result – we even put the least-arrestable people (leaders of the dockworkers union) up the front and they all got immediately arrested. both times, so much energy that could have been spent fighting for palestine instead had to be spent on arrest/court support.

we were met with immediate and overwhelming state violence - having the everloving shit beaten out of us by riot cops, mass arrests (particularly targeting the organisers), attempts to impose wildly disproportionate jail sentences.

at the start of the genocide, the pro-palestine union groups in my city committed to putting all our weight behind almost precisely this strategy (blockading weapons ships at the docks).
