Last week, Riverlane welcomed an inspiring group of women for our 2nd Bertha Swirles Workshop!

We delved into everything from #QEC fundamental to the intricacies of the surface code, and even explored the importance of IP in #quantum.

4️⃣ Real-time #QEC is shaping how QCs scale, but a one-size-fits-all soln isn't viable, according to a lively panel moderated by our VP Applied Research Neil

We must focus on how to tune #QEC tech to each system for utility-scale performance, HW-integrated approaches + trade-offs will be made

🤔GPUs, FPGAs, or ASICs for #QEC?

🧪Each has pros and cons:

🟢 GPUs: Throughput + parallel workload champs

🟢 FPGAs: Agile & adaptable for rapidly evolving #quantum systems

🟢 ASICs: Fab for optimised performance & low latency

But which one should you use NOW? www.riverlane.com/blog/gpus-as...

🌍 In summary, IBM’s announcement is a strong signal that the #quantum hardware industry is converging on a shared view: real-time #QEC is essential for FTQC.

⏱️ Why does real-time matter? Because delays = error backlogs. To truly scale quantum computing, error detection, decoding, and correction must occur continuously and in real-time (as shown below!)

It’s not easy. 3 things are needed for real-time #QEC:

🧩 qLDPCs are more qubit-efficient than surface codes, but much harder to decode in real time (especially on fast superconducting qubits).

✅ Our ambiguity-clustering decoder is more accurate and also runs 27x faster than standard benchmarks (BP-OSD)

🎯 IBM’s proposal to use qLDPC codes and Relay-BP for FPGA/ASIC is a credible step. It hasn't been demonstrated in hardware *yet* but it can't be long!

✅ Our team implemented real-time decoding in hardware for the surface code
