I think "thinking twice"--or many times--is always a good idea. As for adverbs, I take Hemingway's advice, as I do any advice, with a dollop of respect and a grain of salt. He's the father of a particular minimalist style, but in my style, all's good in moderation. #writing #writingcommunity #prose

So much suffering around... I tell patients who are scared, "You're strong. Your survival record so far is an unbeatable 100%! We can do this together."

I just taught a special topics class pretty much summarized by your post at the Sewanee Writers Conference. "Write what you know" is a slippery slope that, at the foot of the hill, leaves us with nothing but memoirs.

I am so with you on this! I love chapter titles. Then my agent says to me, "Put this info in the text." "It's in the chapter title," I say. She says, "Nobody reads chapter titles." And I cry. 🙄

I write like you: as clean a copy as possible in the first draft. However, the advice you quote works for a lot of people who suffer from doubts, hyper-editing, attention deficit, and more. If they mind the mess they create as they go, they'll never finish. The tip's not bad. Just not for everyone.
