Intrusive thoughts with maybe some art sprinkled in between.
Man, I keep thinking that if Marathon was a single player game I'd probably play it simply because of the aesthetic. Such a cool and unique style, hopefully we get to see this kind of daring use of color, form and fashion elsewhere in the future.

Prototyping some pre-rendered background aesthetics in Godot, and I got the camera system to switch backgrounds accordingly. Next up: 3D sprite visibility.

These monowheels are not broken and abandoned, just inactive, toppled, and partially covered in sand by recent storm winds. The whole habitat is still very much in use.

The grass blades on the ground are the same as on the trees. The idea was that you could see where the tree vines are burrowing close to the ground surface. The whole thing is supposed to be one, huge, interconnected plant.

All the stone pillars have these purple-ish veins and blotches. The idea came up during concepting phase, I was experimenting a bit by using a bright magenta underpaint and while coloring in the sand and rock colors, the magenta came through in interesting ways, which ended up in the final product.

Managing the environment's sight lines to hide the completely featureless horizon was an interesting problem, which led to the (rather late) addition of the path that leads deeper into the pillar forest. Looking back, making it was absolutely the right choice.

This is the view of the entire game area from above. The darker part of the ground is where the Reflection Probe affects the lighting. On the bottom there are a few particle emitters doing little dust puffs. Not sure why I added them since I didn't render any video out of this... Practice, I guess?

Couple of fun facts that I couldn't fit anywhere. The sail is translucent, and you can see the sun shining through, but Godot lighting system doesn't seem to support shadow opacity in that manner, so the sail's shadow on the ground is uniform with the rest of the environment.

Trying out some new colors. Small step sideways from my usual gun metal + scratchy orange aesthetic.

Gotta go with Batou from Ghost in the Shell. The manga version especially is a balanced mix of cool, professional, thoughtful and an idiot. Exactly what I aspire (and mostly fail) to be in life.

@drakofox.bsky.social you're it, who's yer fav character?
