Oh okay. FYI without that added context I would never have guessed that's what you meant by that phrase.

I feel like to get through this terrible time, it would help if all of us (myself certainly included) tried to work on being able to both give and receive criticism better to folks who ideally should be our allies even if we disagree on things.

Maybe I've missed it, but I feel like while I've certainly seen lots of people disagreeing with you on things here (sometimes intensely and with great concern about the consequences of those disagreements), I don't recall you frequently being called a Republican for them? (A centrist, though, yeah.)

I agree it should be stronger, but I also think if Dems publicly appear to be chomping at the bit to shut things down, it makes it easy for a shutdown to be spun as Dems' "fault" rather than because the GOP are terrible & Dems refuse to enable that. CW is to avoid that & they love their CW!
August 29, 2025 at 3:33 PM
Does this read as a sign of shutdown avoidance/caving to you? Looks more like generic shutdown-blame hot potato to me (so you can say you tried to get a bipartisan deal but the other side wouldn't budge so the shutdown is their fault.) Or is this more of a bad sign than I thought?

This makes a convincing case to take action but I don't see anything in it about *how* to take action? If it doesn't include suggestions for what exactly to do, it will have much less impact.

I get why you're frustrated, but if you do both, the story is that you did everything you could including some cool new tactics. If you refuse to do something everyone knows you can, the story is about why you chose not to do it, especially when it gives the impression it's just out of convenience.

Noted and appreciated, thanks. But also, why not do the magic minute too? Sure, it won't work, but it makes the base feel good, makes everyone watching feel like you're doing the best you can, and is there any downside besides a little inconvenience for Dems and staff (and for the GOP too)?
July 18, 2025 at 7:34 PM
And yes, I know sometimes y'all do but communication gaps & high expectations mean you don't get credit for it. It's not black & white-- you could do more, we could notice & appreciate what's done more. But the overall pattern is clearly Dems not meeting the moment, as our country falls apart.
July 18, 2025 at 7:29 PM
I'm not sure you guys realize how mentally/emotionally devastating&demotivating it is for us to be in the midst of a huge nat'l crisis while Dems mostly act like business as usual--makes us feel abandoned & hopeless. Unless doomed fights are actively counterproductive, then yes, please, fight them!
July 18, 2025 at 7:17 PM
Yes, sometimes Dems should do things that have 0% chance b/c there are still lots of benefits to fighting hard and slowing things down (& there are so few things that do have any real chance.) We know you'll rarely win but it helps SO much to feel like you're fighting for us rather than giving in.

Focusing attention and awareness on some of the most brutal and unpopular things going on, including individual sympathetic stories-- innocents like Andry being tortured at CECOT, deportations of beloved longtime community members and DREAMers and Afghan allies and people who may die if deported...

Oof, that's awful. I'm so sorry you had to live through that and other things like that as a child. 😢

See conversation thread with Lasker's sibling here: bsky.app/profile/risi.... Also others have checked the dissertation database and nothing from Lasker there either. Don't know if anyone at the NYT has enough integrity left to care at all about this, but still feels worth trying...
Thank you so much for that, and for generally being willing to put yourself out there on this and stand up for what's right!

Hopefully others will chime in on if there are specific people at the Times who'd be good to include on the email? @segyges.bsky.social any thoughts?

Lasker's sibling is willing to reach out to the NYT to share their suspicion/circumstantial evidence that he dropped out of grad school (making it inaccurate for the article to refer to him as "an academic.") Any idea who there to include in the email who might take that at all seriously?

Not 100% certain he dropped out but his sibling thinks so (has also noted his history of lying to the family about things like this) and nobody else has been able to find any evidence he graduated either: bsky.app/profile/lark...
July 5, 2025 at 2:45 AM
Would you consider reaching out to the Times to flag the circumstantial evidence that he may have dropped out and lied about graduating to your family? Or are you willing for someone else to do so?
