It's good to set boundaries for people. As the internet says 'haters gonna hate' and all you can do is let them deal with it since you're not obligated to cater to people even if they compliment you.

Tell them that I am uncomfortable making art for people I don't know that well. Because it's the truth - free things for friends and people I know is less scary than disappointing someone I don't know. Since if I know the person I know, they'll love the art unconditionally.

That's the hard part, getting over others' opinions and perceptions of you. It makes it hard to love oneself when others seem hell-bent on making you out to be the worst.
