A daily reckoning with America’s buried past. Strikes, massacres, uprisings misnamed as “riots.” Stories and people they’d rather erase.
At Homestead in 1892, the terror was America’s rulers turning rifles against Americans. Carnegie paid for a private army, Frick ordered it, the state backed it. Seven steelworkers died.

In 1892, Coeur d’Alene was called a “war.” It wasn’t. It was miners demanding dignity, met with Pinkerton betrayal, troops, and death in open-air prisons.

On April 2, 1891, miners in PA marched for bread and dignity. Deputies opened fire. Ten men dead. Morewood wasn’t a riot—it was a massacre, part of America’s war on labor.

Blood, chains, and rifles in Tennessee. In 1891 miners rose up against convict leasing, slavery by another name. The Coal Creek War helped kill it. Messy solidarity, but it mattered.

May 4, 1886: The Haymarket Affair

Workers rallied for the 8-hour day. Police advanced, a bomb exploded, chaos followed. Four were hanged, one died by dynamite in his cell. Their voices still echo.

Ever wonder why those national guard armories are in your town? Hint: it wasn't to stop invasions. They were anti-labor, set up to stop strikes like this one.

1877: The Great Railroad Strike
After wage cuts, Charles Peck refused to run his train in WV. The strike spread nationwide. 100+ killed. America’s first national strike terrified the bosses.

Starving, jobless, desperate, New Yorkers filled Tompkins Square in 1874. Police answered with violence, and the papers called it “peace.” Riot a Day remembers the riot behind the lie.
