Correctly speaking it is the São Paulo Grand Prix weekend at Interlagos, but many still think of it as the Brazilian Grand Prix. F1 first jetted into Brazil and Interlagos for a world championship race back in 1973.

Opening today of Kleber Mendonça Filho’s “The Secret Agent” (O Agente Secreto)is the largest for any Brazilian film this year with screenings across 730 cinemas and over 1,400 screens. Pre-release screenings have already sold close to 60,000 tickets.

The final of the Copa Libertadores on 29 November in Lima will be played between two Brazilian sides. Flamengo from Rio de Janeiro and Palmeiras from São Paulo. It will be the fifth all Brazil final since 2020 and a repeat of the 2021 final.

27 October 1912 saw the official opening of the Sugar Loaf cable car, the Bondinho Pão de Açúcar. The cable car operated between Praia Vermelha and Morro da Urca. On 18 January 1913, the second stage from Morro da Urca to the summit of Sugar Loaf was inaugurated.

Airlink has taken delivery of its first Embraer E195-E2. The plane made the eight hour South Atlantic crossing from Brazil to South Africa, and did not even have to stop in St Helena. Airlink already hass the Embraer 135, 140, 170, 190 and earlier models of the 195 in its fleet.

LATAM Airlines has announced agreement with Embraer to acquire up to 74 Embraer E195-E2 small narrowbody aircraft. The order includes 24 firm deliveries and 50 purchase options. Deliveries of the aircraft will start in the second half of 2026, initially for LATAM Airlines Brazil

Kleber Mendonça Filho’s multi Cannes prize winning film, 'O agente secreto’ (Secret Agent), has been chosen to represent Brazil in the Academy’s International Film Feature category. Shortlist of 15 films for Academy consideration, is expected to be announced on 16 December 2025

13 September is "Dia Nacional da Cachaça" in Brazil. The day in 1661, following the Cachaça Revolt, that it became legal to make and distribute cachaça in Brazil after the Portuguese had done their best to try to promote Aguardente Bagaçeira, its version of grappa, as Brazil's main drink.

With one round of games to go, we already know the six teams from South America heading to the FIFA World Cupin 2026. They are Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Ecuador, Colombia and Paraguay. The 7th placed team, currently either Venezuela or Bolivia, qualifies for the Play-Off.

The name of Íris Lettieri, who died in Rio on 28 August, will mean little to non-Brazilians, but anyone who travelled through Rio airport will know and remember her very distinct voice. She was “a voz do aeroporto" (the voice of the airport). Once heard, never forgotten.

Our annual reminder that this is “carnaval”…. when somebody in the British media suggests that Notting Hill is just like Rio! Dates for those interested are 13 to 18 February 2026.

In August 2014 the then new Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi, and his assistant, Jenna Coleman, dropped in on Rio to promote the new series that would start in UK on 23 August 2014. Early use of a Drone Cam to grab great shots of the Doctor and Cyberman in Rio.

Remiss of us to overlook that Sunday was Dia Nacional do Pão de Queijo (Cheese Bread Day). Crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside and full of flavour, Brazil’s cheese bread was born in Minas Gerais in the middle oft he 18th century.

13 years ago, 12 August 2012, the London Olympics closed and the Olympic Flag was passed on to the then and current Mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes. Rio de Janeiro became the next host city in 2016, the first South American city to host them, and only 3rd city in southern hemisphere.

Livraria Funambule in Petropolis in the state of Rio has been voted 10th in the list of World’s Most Beautiful Book-Cafés by 200,000 book lovers in the 1000 Libraries Awards. Rio’s Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading was voted 8th most beautiful library in the world.

A new Rio Olympic Museum, a cultural facility dedicated to the memory of the 2016 Games, will open in Rio next week. The museum occupies the upper level of the Velodrome in the Olympic Park in Barra and will operate at first from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Brazil through to the final of the Copa América Femenina in Ecuador and on Saturday will play Colombia. It means both have qualified for the 2028 Olympics. Out of 9 Copa América Femenina tournaments Brazil has won 8. Brazil will also host the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2027.

Following the Euros, the next major port of call for women’s international football will be FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil starting on 24 June and concluding on 27 July 2027. BBC and ITV have secured UK broadcasting rights to the championship, ensuring it remains free-to-air.
