Selfless medics don’t treat private patients. Neither Kate nor Charlie have experienced cancer in the way that most NHS patients do.

Exactly - pray do tell

And when afterwards you decide to formally complain and there’s delay after delay and excuses and lies as to what went wrong and you know in general, they don’t want to learn or reflect but just excuse their failings.

What is missing is the context within which the death takes place. If you’ve hard weeks of every constituent part of the health and social care system letting you down - hospice, GP, pharmacist, hospital. Weeks of battling for support, information, care. That impacts the experience of death

It simply won’t happen - it will just be a talking shop aimed at preventing AD
December 1, 2024 at 9:36 PM
You’re spot on- it’s a ploy by the anti AD lobby to kick AD into the long grass. Look who’s been mooted as chair for starters.

In the current system ime an oncologist doesn’t even necessarily copy in the hospice to a clinic letter nor the GP even have any proactive contact with a terminally ill patient..
December 1, 2024 at 9:32 PM
For this to be achieved will require not only huge resources but a fundamental shift in culture across all the constituent parts of the health and social care systems. I have no faith in this ever happening at all
December 1, 2024 at 9:32 PM
Oh yes fund palliative care whilst cancer patients wait for diagnostic scans - that makes sense.

Can someone explain to me in what moral universe N. Irish MPs believed they were morally entitled to vote?
November 29, 2024 at 10:36 PM
Why did Scottish or N. Irish MPs vote?
November 29, 2024 at 3:53 PM
It really doesn’t you know
November 26, 2024 at 8:25 PM
I think they have been paying attention - they simply don’t want the bill
November 26, 2024 at 1:28 PM
I think we know what this amendment is really about - a cowardly way of in essence defeating the bill.
November 26, 2024 at 1:26 PM
My starting point is that we have to avoid ‘ghettoising’ palliative care and its shuffling off to be something to do with hospices. That can absolve all other parts of the health and social care system from their own responsibility for their role in the pc/eol journey for terminal patients
November 25, 2024 at 10:01 AM
This x a million. If the bill falls, I do not expect those who didn’t support it ( in and out of Parliament) to do anything about better pc funding. But whatever the outcome, we need a proper debate about pc

I’d like to see Streeting look at the Byzantine-unfit for purpose-designed to defend staff -cover up errors -complaints system for patients
November 24, 2024 at 9:32 PM
But we ( patients and GPs) need to be clear eyed about the failings because when they fail, the impact can be devastating
November 24, 2024 at 3:09 PM
The bill is an ‘opt in’ - no opt out needed. Just like abortion
November 24, 2024 at 12:01 PM
Just quoting Canada, whose law is very different anyway, does not contribute to a really robust discussion. We need to look at examples closer to home but even then, they should not be determinative. We are not another country.
November 24, 2024 at 11:45 AM
To be fair, allowing opt outs on religious grounds is very different from an MP using religion in her decision making and thus imposing those views on the lives of others. Also opting out is a well established principle eg with abortion
November 24, 2024 at 11:36 AM
Apart from the religious issue, I find it concerning that a Lord Chancellor should engage the slippery slope fallacy in her decision making.
November 24, 2024 at 11:31 AM
It really isn’t that straightforward.
November 24, 2024 at 11:20 AM
It’s never as simple as it just being the system and not the people in it. There are some frankly appalling uncaring GPs regardless of the system they work within
