Today I received a surprise gift. I'm beside myself at how thoughtful it is.

I've wanted to get involved in the furry community, but commissioning art for a fursona seemed intimidating to me.

Problem solved: I was gifted this art commission, it is utterly PERFECT and beautiful, and so totally ME!
I've sold my first official commission, and I am so happy about it!

I have been meaning to post links to my DJ sets.

This is my second and most current performance:

2024 TVL Band Camp set
Melodic techno / progressive house set performed at the TVL Band Camp, October 26, 2024. The original recording failed, so this performance is recorded live from the same playlist.

Eight years ago, I traveled to Chernobyl, went inside the Sarcophagus, and saw the Unit 4 control room.

I like to think that the Zone looked into my heart and granted my deepest wish.

Now I’m a woman.

I'm reflecting now on how, after transitioning, some people find that their families still love them. Some don't.

Last month, my grandmother passed away. I found out almost two weeks later from a random Google search uncovering her obituary.

My parents didn't tell me.

They didn't tell me.

I simply cannot read this comic without crying, no matter how many times I’ve seen it.

(It’s in two parts; I’m not sure if that’s clear in a quote skeet.)
Post your most popular art from Twitter.

Also, coincidentally, the first thing I ever posted on the bad place.

Professional milestone: As I approach graduating with my master's in electrical engineering at Arizona State University, I took the Order of the Engineer oath last night and accepted my ring at the nearest OE Link at UIC.

The NSA is the only intelligence agency with an unclassified museum open to the public. They had on display a mechanical PAL, or Permissive Action Link, that would protect US nuclear weapons from unauthorized use. It seems a mechanical combination lock protected some nukes through the 1980's!

This past summer, Elizabeth and I visited the National Cryptologic Museum. This is the US Navy Bombe, which broke German naval Enigma traffic in WWII, protecting Allied shipping. I had a chance to meet with people in their collections department. Ok, I was spooked by their NSA.gov email addresses!

This is me, before having lunch. I was practically glowing, walking into the doctor's office for my 18 month HRT follow up, grateful that I did it. I'm now a happy, confident woman. 🏳️‍⚧️

It's been a while since I posted an Enigma restoration update. Why the rotor advance mechanism is broken: The cast metal rocker bar cracked where a pin held the axle that holds the spring loaded pawls that advance the rotors. Given the non original spring, I suspect a prior botched repair attempt.

I recently attended a physics colloquium at UChicago given by Carl Willis of UNM on the CP-1 reactor. He posted some pictures, including the historic artifacts I brought to his talk.

I had my first DJ performance this past weekend at the birthday party for the Pumping Station: One makerspace. It went well, and I had a great time. The set was EDM focused with a lot of trance and melodic techno.

Enigma restoration project update: The L key in this machine (front lower right, German keyboards were not the same as US) was too stiff when typing. After disassembling the machine, I realized it was because of a previous restoration attempt using a different size spring, visible below. 1/3

Finished rewiring and installing new burrs on my bargain broken Mazzer Mini espresso grinder. It seems to work! So I’m enjoying the fruits of my labor with some Ethiopian Sidamo coffee that I roasted.

I've almost done with my first semester in grad school, and my nuclear reactor theory course is the first time I've had to work with a particular unpleasantness known as Bessel functions.

I created this meme after some traumatic homework. I'm wondering just how many people will get it.

If my parents don’t want to talk to me now that I identify as their daughter and not their son, fine, they can spend this holiday alone. It’s their choice. I’ve got a cool aunt-in-law (is that a word?) who is welcoming me and my enby spouse to join her family today, and I’m grateful for that.

I need to remember this in case anyone asks…
"i'm a girl."

"cool, what's in your pants?"

"A message... and part of a system of messages... pay attention to it!

Sending this message was important to us. We considered ourselves to be a powerful culture.

This place is not a place of honor... no highly esteemed deed is commemorated here..."
“i’m a girl.”
“cool, what’s in your pants?”
“that which cannot be named. that which cannot be known. that which drives mortal men to madness. and my phone.”

This is the reason V-E Day didn’t happen 1-2 years later.

It’s an Enigma reflector, or Umkehrwalze, and its design contains Enigma’s worst cryptographic flaw, that no letter can encrypt to itself, which enabled Bletchley Park to use cribs (suspected plaintext attacks) to break it.

This weekend, I picked up a broken Mazzer Mini A espresso grinder at a rummage sale for a cafe. It was dropped and the timer circuit board broke, but the motor is fine, and it runs if I bypass the motor relay. Looks like I got a good deal!
