6/8 and 9/8 usually get that triplet feel but it's not a necessity. For example Dave Brubeck's "Blue Rondo a la Turk" weaves between 2-2-2-3 (which really reads like 4/4 with an extra eighth note at the end) and 3-3-3 (what you're thinking 9/8 should sound like)
