I know who you mean, but “veg wanker” sounds like someone who does something unspeakable to parsnips and/or courgettes.

In suburban London in the 80s, allegedly, Pampas grass in the front garden was code for a house being inhabited by “swingers”!

There was probably quite a lot of Pampas grass about in the Holy lands back in them days, more than there was Xmas trees at any rate.
