Because of the way we are taught music a newbie is fooled into thinking that white notes are somehow independent. We can sing “do re mi fa sol la ti do” and that corresponds nicely with the C Major scale. We take for granted that the black notes are mainly the navigation guides not to be played.

The notes A, B, C, D, E, F, G give us our first mode. That makes up all the white notes on a keyboard. These notes make up the “A” Natural minor scale also known as “A” Aeolian mode. But if you start on “B” finding the new Mode is easy. It’s pattern of black notes that give the clue to the puzzle.

Once we realize that modes are based on Major scales you can pick any note in any major scale and play a random mode by keeping the notes that belong to that scale. Knowing that there seven distinct notes in a scale and that there are 12 notes in an octave there are technically 7 x 12 unique modes.
