Here's a pile of oyster shells on a beach I came across at an old whaling station in New South Wales. Apparently, there are ancient middens nearby containing shells over 10,000 years old. People have been eating these things for a long time...

Today is #RemembranceSunday in the UK, and this is the 'Cross of Sacrifice'. There's one in every Commonwealth War Graves site with over 40 graves. This example is in Tyne Cot, in Belgium, which is a sobering place to visit.

When I was in the New Forest recently, I came across quite a few areas of burned gorse like this. Burning remains a key component of heathland management, but it is a bit controversial.

Yesterday was Halloween, today is All Saints Day, and tomorrow is All Souls Day - the Day of the Dead. In honour of all three, here is Franz Sedlacek's 1933 painting 'Ghosts in the Tree', which I came across last autumn, in Vienna.

After weeks of hoo-ha, it's finally Halloween. I remember it being a much lower-key affair when I was a kid, involving far less plastic. Anyway, I came across this decoration recently. and thought whoever did it had the right idea - just a hint of mystery and menace in an otherwise everyday scene.
