If you don't want to hack it, another option (which I've done on the others in the house) is to set up a rule for it to run photo frame every three hours which so far over-rules the ads whilst the screen is on.

I've wiped one of mine because of the ads and it now thinks it's an android tablet so can run all sorts of apps (mainly to communicate with all of my music to playback while I work).
