But our hygienist resigned, and it was several months before we could hire a new one (shortage), so appointments during those months without one had to be canceled, unfortunately bumping them way further down the road even after the new hygienist started

It’s nuanced. Some practices, such as the one I just retired from, schedule the cleaning recall appointments 3-6 months out while the patient is there in the office for their current cleaning

Also a shortage of dental hygienists in St. Louis - my office was only able to hire a part-time hygienist with open availability over a year out
