Work in a cathedral to nature. Archives, libraries, natural history, medieval medical manuscripts and morris dancing. Personal account, all views my own.
Poor Bertie isn’t feeling well, and so to the emergency vet. I was rather looking forward to a quiet evening; should have known better.

Sat in a restaurant observing a table desperately waiting to pay. I don’t suppose anyone relevant is reading this but, if you are, it’s very simple: when someone asks for the bill, they want to leave. Every minute they wait is ruining an otherwise great experience.

Book, wine, and a Landmark Trust. There are worse ways to spend a Sunday.

Love is… the amazing @tanyakirk.bsky.social has just booked for us to see the Tres Riches Heures in August. Not the best time to visit Paris, but there will never be a bad time to view such an amazing manuscript.

A terrible picture but hankies can just about be seen. A wonderful day in Brighton seeing old friends and celebrating Brighton Morris’s Day of Dance.

Somehow this room looked nicer when I couldn’t see the bricks in the walls. What a lovely weekend it’s been stripping wallpaper (and quite a bit of plaster)

Sorry to be the person who puts photos of what they’re eating on social media but I fear I was a bit harsh on Berlin earlier. The city’s restaurants have redeemed themselves.

Ah, the joy of being a lone diner… sometimes… sometimes sat in a lively room, feeling amongst company. Other times being sat in a soulless corridor on the way to the toilet, the chatter of the restaurant tantalisingly out of reach. Guess which I got tonight. Oh, and ants crawled out of my salad.

Is anything more depressing than emptying recently loaded bookcases? (Nb I am aware that many things are more depressing but indulge me. I can’t wait for this house move to be over)

When my alarm went off at 4.45 this morning I thought to myself: what I’d really like is to get home to is the warm glow of flashing lights as the road directly outside the house is dug up.

Ten years ago @tanyakirk.bsky.social and I sat in this pub, at this table, and decided to buy a house. Tomorrow we leave for new adventures. It’s been a good run.

An empty room to explore… (moving day on Monday)

Happy Christmas to one and all. Sound on to the hear the moment my father-in-law set fire to his arm.

And then home, to rest (for which read ‘fall asleep on the sofa’. Happy Christmas one and all.

Can’t decide between a sweet and cheese? Have both. Just don’t forget a glass of madeira.

Followed by kipper and potatoes (before and after) with a glass of stout.

A crab meat on toast starter. A splash of Tabasco is essential.

A small glass of something to begin.

And so the Christmas holiday begins. Me and the elf choosing from the menu at St John…

There’s a Christmas tradition in my neighbourhood of decorating windows. Each street is given a particular day to reveal their designs in a sort of mass advent calendar. The ‘sold’ sign next to my attempt is a reminder that this is the last year I’ll get to take part.

Today’s dance move…

There are influencers in the restaurant. Here’s a picture of my food. Do I get a free meal now, is that how it works? #modernlifeisrubbish

I’m done for the day, I’m done for the year. No more 5am alarms for a couple of weeks. But before I head for home, time for one last 2023 lunch in London at the best restaurant in town.

Despite one of the doves looking like an overweight seagull sat on a branch, the Christmas window didn’t come out too badly this year.

A Harvey’s beer crate can be put to many uses. In this case to move the Christmas tree out of the reach of Bertie. Functional rather than attractive decorations this year.
