Was a scientist, still a skeptic. Experimental winemaker. Nurturer of things green, furry and feathery. Living the Good Life in the foothills of the Southern Alps.
"Ok, I'm prepared to accept, for argument's sake, that there may be a prima facie case for more weeding.

No argument here. Except I would say, as someone who has a large flock of free-range chickens (completely unfenced), that hens and, particularly roosters, don't need any excuse to be mean to one another. (photo: the breakfast delegation coming over the road to remind me it's tucker time)

Yeah, I know it's a bit of a waste of meat, mate. Perhaps try and think of it as an opportunity to remove some rocks and improve the soil structure?

All you need is a shovel, Ken. Clear a patch with the shovel, dig a trench, fill the trench with the grass, cover the grass with the dirt, repeat, repeat, repeat...

I think by now we have to admit that they have well and truly earned that level of contempt.

My greenhouse has both! We're thinking about solar on the house roof too as it is now probably economic.

One picture is from China, not sure about the other. We have wind turbines on mountains here in New Zealand. They work well. Trump is an idiot.

They work well on a mountain but you need to be able to access appropriate infrastructure: roads, the power grid...

Remember that time Obama sent troops to police American streets, talked nonsense about windmills and threatened his political opponents with arrest? No, neither do I.

I miss those days.

Grafting. I've decided to turn some of my 30+ cherry plum trees into apricot trees. How hard can that be?

It's going to be a great year for winemaking! I feel it in my bones. Lost most of the chardonnay to mildew last year. So, this year I've put in a top wire over the stone wall and pruned vines to that so they are more exposed to wind and sunlight. Here's hoping.

Winter strawberries, and they taste delicious. The advantages of having a large greenhouse. There are no bumblebees about so they must be pollinated by the few flies or other little insects that make it into the greenhouse in winter.

Trying my hand at vegetative propagation. These are apple and plum winter prunings (July) that I have just stuck in the greenhouse soil bed. No IBA or much care apart from regular watering. Hoping some of them take. Bought some IBA so will try that too.

The new ducklings get their first swim at about 3 weeks. They take to it like ducks to water though the water temp would still be close to freezing.

“My philosophy is very simple,” Representative Lewis once told an audience. “When you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, say something! Do something! Get in trouble, good trouble, necessary trouble.”

On 19 April inhabitants of Weimar were made to tour the Ohrdruf camp in groups of a hundred. General Eisenhower contacted General George Marshall and asked that members of Congress and groups of journalists be taken around the newly liberated camps. And still the incredulity remained.
