Not surprised! I do think that very slowly things may be changing somewhat.The law has changed to facilitate alternatives and I notice e.g. more people, including me and my wife, trending towards double-barreled last names for their kids.

My Dr. wife wanted to take my name because it is still the thing to do in Germany. Something about having the whole family under 1 last name. *I* preferred her keeping her name.
