I took risks by being outspoken at my behavioral health care position. I sometimes worried about losing my job. Instead I was invited to higher level policy conversations because I had the only unique perspective. Fingers crossed this keeps working for me!

For a layman like myself, I interpret this as the feeling we get about the story world versus the lore we know behind it. Am I close?

He has platforms. Most people here aren’t interested. We can hear what dumb jerks think everywhere else.

I visited the jail I was in a few years after my release. The feeling of looking in from the outside is indescribable. Knowing all the suffering going on behind those walls is a curse.

Part of my role is listening to these stories and sharing them with policy makers. All we have is anecdotal evidence but I’ve seen a story lead to more funding than a spreadsheet more than once!

I hear you. It can be hard to give ourselves permission. I think you deserve it though.

I agree it matters. My experience doing the work is we are better off learning to cope than waiting for society to get better though. I am in Washington State and the housing and treatment hurdles have been so high we are essentially in a state of perpetual triage.

And does it matter? As someone coping with anxiety and PTSD all I want is something that works. As a substance use professional I tried to help others find whatever works for them. CBT is a good example. We don’t use it to change our world, but we reshape our perception of it which feels the same.

Treat yourself well. You deserve it✌🏻

Isn’t this why we develop specific coping skills? To better adapt to external stressors? It gives us a way to manage symptoms without expecting society to change on our behalf. The decompensation often occurs when those skills can’t keep up with mounting external pressures.

Very helpful. I was able to listen to her in person during the pandemic. She did a presentation to our department at a retreat on Lopez Island, WA. Working in rural public health during the pandemic led to extreme burnout for a lot of us. It was great to get some tools and validation🤓
