I hope my rubber duck is not an illusion.
"The research shows that even invertebrates, whose brains are vastly different from ours, also possess a sense of body ownership similar to humans. Studying these creatures could therefore tell us more about this key component of self-perception."
The rubber hand illusion works on octopuses too
Like humans, octopuses can fall for the rubber hand illusion and believe that a fake arm is theirs. This suggests they have a sense of their own body, just as we do.

A new version of my draft on CRIT is now available at philarchive.org/rec/NABHTH! It has significantly improved on the following areas:

1) addressing the Meta-problem
2) more explicit on the Hard Problem
3) referencing to structuralism, that shares ideas with CRIT
4) improved argumentation
Richard M. Naber, Hacking the Hard Problem of Consciousness with the ‘Consciousness as Rich Information Theory’ (CRIT) - PhilArchive
I introduce and defend the Consciousness as Rich Information Theory (CRIT), a novel framework grounded in both philosophical reasoning and empirical observation. CRIT builds on ideas from structuralis...

Epiphenomenalism is just strong illusionism plus something extra that magically coincides with what we report about consciousness.

If you’re talking about moral philosophy please don’t forget to talk about moral scope… “who matters?”

It’s probably the most important moral philosophy question. Answering it wrongly can condemn countless trillions of beings - however good your ethical system might be.

“If evolution is to work smoothly, consciousness in some shape must have been present at the very origin of things” - It is a pity that after 135 years, this argument of William James is still not refuted, yet left aside by so many philosophers of mind.

I'm not surprised. I recently threw a nut at my jackdaw friend, who did not see it landing on a chair, so it went searching 2 meters further on, at the end of the virtual trajectory of the nut. Do they solve parabolic equations? No, but these are advanced Predictive Processing machines, like us!

If phenomenal consciousness is an illusion does that destroy ethics or extend it? A great article by @keithfrankish.bsky.social linking two deep #Sentientism themes... philosophy of mind (what is consciousness?) and the extension of moral scope way beyond humanity.
