End speed traps and roadside breathalyzer, since they don’t give drivers a fair opportunity to evade the law? What about police use of fingerprint and DNA evidence which are unfair to criminals, since it makes it harder for them to escape punishment?

The active element of the CPC - the base - is hard right, even extreme and will no doubt continue to dominate nomination meetings, and leadership races. A moderate CPC leader would have won a clear majority. Still more than 40% voted for a Cdn version of the Republican Party.

Of course those who have risen to power based on disinformation have an interest in preventing any attempt to limit or discourage the spread of disinformation.

If the Conservatives had a different leader - and not someone whose entire life has been about partisan attack - the time might be right for a unity gov in Canada. The country is under threat. The welfare of the country mattered to past Conservative leaders. It is not part of Poilievre’s agenda.

The cdn economy will be disrupted in ways that are significant and painful but over time it will reorient itself. Canadians, though, will never again regard the US as a good faith actor.
