For me, Flowers for Algernon Daniel Keyes with Tortilla Flat (and follow ups) by Steinbeck a close second. Anything by Niel Gaiman but particularly The Sandman (all of the "comics") and American Gods also in the mix

I was recommended this as a YA and re-read a couple of times since. Really admire how the sense of dread is maintained right the way through - one of the scariest books I've ever read

Visited here over summer 24. Loved that initiates had to cross a pool with a path just submerged to make it look like they were walking on water
