Reform saying that the UK is fundamentally a Christian country rather misses the point that only 5% of the population go to church. Only 18% say the Bible is relevant to them. I woould be amazed if half of that number actually knew who wrote it. (Hint: the answer is not Jesus.)

Having begun three doctorates in the social sciences and finished none, for me, the whole social studies issue is a bourgeois meditation on semantics.
There should be more pure research positions in the social sciences and humanities and also more pure teaching positions. These are distinct skill sets. Many are excellent at one and not the other. Each should be valued. A university norm that one excel in both is unnecessary.
