I spent yesterday learning how to ID Michigan's native freshwater mussels in a free workshop led by the state's top experts - 2 retired dudes sharing their accumulated knowledge of these fascinating animals

DYK mussels use a lifelike lure to attract fish, which are hosts for their parasitic larvae?

🪰 Freshwater Friday - Flat-bodied stone-clingers (Heptageniidae)

Larvae in this family of mayflies have a flattened shape, which is perfect for clinging to rocks in fast-flowing streams.

If you spot them, it’s a good sign of a healthy river.

New study from our lab: Feeding efficiency (trophic impact) of goldfish varies with combinations of thermal & salinity conditions typical of urban ponds in north temperate regions. Salinity enhances efficiency at temperatures below the thermal optimum of goldfish.

Effects of temperature and chloride salinity on the functional response of goldfish (Carassius auratus) - Biological Invasions

Not much is scarier for a #GreatLakes fish than the invasive sea lamprey, sometimes called vampire fish 🧛

But while they're more trick than treat in their introduced range, they're actually threatened in parts of their native range of the Atlantic coasts of Europe + North America - that's scary!

1/ Carlton & Cohen (1993) described the global transport of species as "ecological roulette" (www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...), whereas Paine & Zaret (1973) equated the introduction of non-native species to ecological gambling (jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...). #bioinvasions #invasivespecies
Ecological Gambling
MOST natural ecosystems are overwhelmingly complex, and conventional ecological wisdom holds that tropical communities are more so than their temperature or higherlatitude equivalents. This belief has...

Spooky scary zombie salmon? Pacific salmon don't live long postspawning. While some die immediately, others live briefly + embrace rotting—literally—floating around and deteriorating. As their bodies decay, nutrients return to the environment, even to their future offspring! doi.org/10.1002/fsh....
