Not planning to be here much, my main account is on the fediverse at https://discuss.systems/@ricci/ - you can follow it directly here as

Hmm you might want to display a specific explanatory post if some who's not logged in loads it infosec.exchange/@fifonetwork...

Attached: 1 image @ricci@discuss.systems This is what I get (see screenshot). So I thought the joke was that without Bluesky's additions, there's really no one there.

If you find this kind of thing interesting you may also like this feed bsky.app/profile/did:... (everyone not on Bluesky PDSes, regardless of whether you follow them or not) or this labeler bsky.app/profile/pds.... which puts badges on all accounts not on Bluesky PDSes

Oh hell yeah this is perfect!

(I don't fully buy that argument since we have existence proofs that contradict it, but it's the strongest argument I know of for why it's okay that it's so much work to set up full alternatives to bluesky on atproto)
November 23, 2025 at 8:52 PM
To play devil's advocate, maybe the needs of trust and safety and legal requirements actually are what drive the need to set up an entire social media company to run a federated social network. Maybe the protocol is just designed for that reality.

I think it's open source? But I haven't looked much at that part of the architecture.

Northsky is picking up steam, it has a focus on 2SLGBTQIA+ folks. It seems like no coincidence that the two major alternatives in the microblogging sphere are for specific communities that have been treated poorly by the bluesky moderation team.

If I were going to make it I'd name it Bluesky Minus Bluesky as an homage to garfieldminusgarfield.net

Yeah I have that one pinned

I've got a proposal for how to measure this: codeberg.org/ricci/are-we...

It's currently calculated by arewedecentralizedyet.online but not yet displayed because I think it needs more discussion

I think it would be cool to make a feed that shows only your follows on non bsky PDSes but this is beyond my current atproto skills
November 23, 2025 at 9:01 AM
Let me put it this way: the bluesky PBC moderation team has as much power as 1,361 moderation teams on the fediverse, combined. (How many fedi instances have to block an account to block it from the fraction of the network bsky controls) That's a whole lot of power in a very small number of hands.
November 23, 2025 at 8:49 AM
FWIW I've added email centralization stats to arewedecentralizedyet.online (spoiler, while it's fairly centralized, it's far less centralized than atproto)
Are We Decentralized Yet?
A site with statistics regarding how concentrated user data is on various web services

Right. (I'm on my own PDS.) Point is that it's not just the protocol that matters, but the way it's used, too.
November 23, 2025 at 8:31 AM
Remember though that under current deployment, if you say something that angers bsky, they can kill your tangled account, poof. This is why decentralized deployment matters
November 23, 2025 at 8:26 AM
yeah exactly (though afaict most of their users are on bluesky PBC infrastructure still)
November 23, 2025 at 7:41 AM
I kind of agree, the current state of affairs is that bluesky itself is growing faster than all of the alternatives, so when they pick up we decentralize for a while but then it returns to the status quo. What's needed are services that pull a lot of users based on their own reputations.
November 23, 2025 at 7:38 AM
Like the inverse of the independent PDS labeler, but it's unclear to me whether I'd get in trouble for labeling 40M+ users :)
November 23, 2025 at 7:29 AM
I'd like to see it as a feed or labeler tho - would be a good way of showing people what would happen if bsky cut them off. I did a fediverse thing like this at moderation-explorer.online but would really like to be able to do something similar, very accessible, for the atmosphere.

yeah that's why I haven't tried to move over too - but you can still support them financially (I do)

Unclear to me how open signups are, but a few thousand people have moved there. See blackskyweb.xyz . I think Link is visible there but idk I'm not there myself.
