In 1913, Moseley discovered that the frequencies of lines in X-ray spectra are proportional to the squares of integer numbers, that he called "atomic numbers". Later, in 1914, he concluded that those numbers are the numbers of positive charges in the nucleus. archive.org/details/lond...
