With respect, back in the day unemployment benefit was relatively simple to claim. After a divorce I claimed housing benefit and child tax credits and was saddled with debt having been mistakenly overpayed, then treated like a criminal. I have no desire to return to that. I value my independence.

You are not considering the value to myself of independence. If you have never claimed benefits you may be unaware of the loss of agency and independence that goes with it. Dignity is important in order age.

I don't qualify bcos I work a part-time job. At 73 I'd like not to work but I can't afford it. We have the lowest state pension in Europe and the highest cost of living. I dread being too ill to work.
