Fair enough

Sh0e has many incredibly wrong takes and views, but this is very obviously sarcasm.

And that's only including slavery officially sanctioned and labelled "slavery" by the government; prison labour, wage slavery, human trafficking, etc. are still widespread, and have often been used to replace the explicitly labelled variety.

Debate, even of the more bloodsports variety, provides an avenue of exposure to ideas people might not otherwise have heard.
July 31, 2023 at 11:42 PM
(as in, they had changed their minds because the debate streamer made good points)
July 31, 2023 at 11:39 PM
It won't surprise you to learn I watch debate streamers sometimes.

People regularly donate saying they had started changing their minds because of a debate with someone they had previously respected.

Also, other media also reinforces already held ideas, but without room for pushback.
July 31, 2023 at 11:37 PM
Finally an argument!

Summary of response: Bloodsports debates can still bring ideas to people who might otherwise not hear them.

Nice try at a dodge that doesn't answer my question.

You clearly stated that you can expect a video to have the central thesis in the description. What are your examples of people on YouTube whom you respect? I will go check if they do this.
July 31, 2023 at 10:46 PM
Alright, without going to check that they do this, who are your favourite polemecists on YouTube?
July 31, 2023 at 10:39 PM
Core arguments:
- Most of the problems and benefits of debate also apply to other forms of political media (to a greater or lesser extent)
- The direct confrontational aspect of debate has some advantages (and downsides) not present in those other forms
July 31, 2023 at 10:33 PM
Do you actually normally expect someone to write the thesis in the description? Basically nobody does this.

If you want the central thesis, it's at 45 seconds in.

It takes time for me to think carefully, double-check my sources and write a reply. (and sometimes I'm still not satisfied with it and want to tweak it)

I engaged in good faith because I thought you might teach me something. But it seems you're not interested in analysis.

So, have a nice day 🙂

The hormone papers make perfect sense in context (critiquing debate as sports), which you'd know if you actually watched the video.

Tbh this seems a lot more applicable to your replies than to the video essay:
"doesnt really look like a lot of substance is to be found and my time has value"
July 31, 2023 at 10:13 PM
Those are all words. Unfortunately
I don't know what you're trying to say with them.

If you're saying "debates are either bloodsports (for engagement), and the other type of debate isn't on YouTube", then:
- overly simplistic
- Jangles Sciencelad's video addresses this
- and partly agrees with you
July 31, 2023 at 10:08 PM
That would indeed be great for accessibility!

I know it's not quite as good as a properly punctuated transcript, but YouTube does now have a transcript feature. (I suspect you already knew this, but thought I'd mention in case)

All that said — do you have any criticism of the video's substance?
July 31, 2023 at 2:01 PM
What part did you disagree with?
July 31, 2023 at 10:37 AM
I don't fetishise debate, but it does have value.

Jangles Sciencelad did an excellent video on this.
