Fire’s kind of a recurring theme in the early chapters of my Galemancer fic, so this one was both fun and brutal to choose.

Here’s a snippet from Waukeen’s Rest — Fiodhan charging straight into the flames to save others, and Gale being the one to pull him back together.
Sharp pain shot up my back and that’s when I realized I was still on fire. I shed my owlbear form, hoping it would douse the flames. I enjoyed a brief moment of relief before the flames re-ignited, spreading over my fur armor. The smell of cooking meat reached my nose as my skin began to burn. I smacked at the flames, feeling myself becoming hysterical as terror took hold. “Pluo!” a voice commanded from behind me. I was inundated by a shower of cold water, shocking my body so much that my heart seized momentarily. I gasped involuntarily, sucking in droplets of water. I gagged and dropped to my knees, hacking up bile between each ragged breath. The water ran painfully over my burns, the flames sizzling as they finally petered out and died. My heart pounded erratically as darkness began to seep into the corners of my vision. Gale appeared in front of me, grabbing me by the shoulders. “Fiodhan, my gods!” I blinked at him through the water dripping from my hair. I focused on him, centering myself as I worked to catch my breath, each one a bit easier than the last. “Where do we go?” A hazy shadow appeared behind Gale, waving their arms in front of themselves, trying uselessly to dispel the smoke. More blurry shapes wavered behind them. “We have to jump,” I wheezed, nodding at the broken floor. Gale followed my gaze, then grabbed my shoulders and hauled me over the side. I yelped and flung my hands out to grab something, but it was too late. We landed heavily on top of a table, falling a second time as the brittle wood collapsed under our weight. “By the hells, Gale,” I groaned, rolling off the wreckage of the table. I stumbled to my feet, unsteady and nearly delirious from exhaustion.

The dragon scanned the room, its eyes narrowing as it spotted the alien cowering on the ground across from me. I could feel the dragon’s malice seeping into the room like a poisonous cloud. Its nostrils flared, then the dragon opened its mouth. Two rows of colossal teeth glinted in the glare from the sunlight. For a second time this morning, the only thing I could do was accept the coming of death. I closed my eyes and tried my best to picture something peaceful, like a glade or a river—but all I could see was blinding light as the dragon engulfed the room in flames. Deep in the back of my mind, I held onto a glimmer of hope that the capsule would hold, but the sound of cracking glass didn’t give me a lot of confidence.

We… eh… we have tadpoles in our heads.” “Tadpoles?” Nettie looked blankly at Gale, then her eyebrows shot up. “Mind flayer tadpoles!?” Astarion leaned forward, annoyed. “Well, what other kinds are there? It’s not like frogs hopped into our eyes.” Nettie regarded us warily. “That’s… a serious condition.” “No shit,” Astarion muttered under his breath, forcing me to suppress a laugh.
