18 November 1916 #otd

It would be remiss of me to not remember what David O'Mara would remind people, that the end of the Somme for the French Army was not today but on 17th December

The fighting costing 2,600+ French lives

By the end almost 50/50 in number of divisions rotated through Somme 🇫🇷🤝🇬🇧

1.3+ million soldiers died for France during WWI

Today the 11th day of the 11th month, at the 11th hour
We remember all soldiers of all nations

“A man with no memory is a man without life,
a nation without memory is a nation without a future”

💐 Look at the flowers

In France, 1st May = Muguet, a good-luck tradition often sent home in letters or held in photos.

Here, it’s not muguet but looks like white lilac, maybe they couldn’t find muguet?

📅 So best educated guess?
Around 1st May.

During War people had no humour... wrong

Just a standard group photo of WW1 soldiers?
Something in this picture is very curious...

No caption on the photo, just my educated guesses:

⏰ 9:15am, 25 Sept 1915

The worst single day of Allied losses on the Western Front and one you’ve likely never heard of.

In just 12+ hours:

🇫🇷 23,615 French dead
🇬🇧 8,581 British dead

A day almost erased from memory.
Today remember Champagne, Artois & Loos

Sgt Laurent Marie Bernier, 38, was hit at 16:00 by a shell, his leg torn off and head wounded.

Herve Lambert commented: “We’d not moved him 10m when a 150 fell where he’d been.”

For all Herve efforts, Laurent died the next day; buried at La Nécropole Fontaine Routhon

Bored this afternoon?

I have been busy ...
📽️15 minute video recreates what two soldiers went through at Verdun.
Told through the soldiers hand written letters from the front, as they endure the mud, the bombardments, and the losses...

26.7.16 Massiges
Nothing new, we still don't have any rest, because it's just always chores, still great weather, what great weather, but we shouldn't be locked up and kept like this. We are going to stay 8 days here, before doing 8 days in the 1st line, as I thought… but at least its quiet

Couple of words before leaving the trenches. Am healthy & nothing new. We are impatiently waiting to leave, but it will be hard because we have a long way to go, at least 4 to 5 hours of walking, which the shoulders will not like! I kiss you my darling. See you tomorrow

The nights are short. At night, its always tense, you see nothing or almost nothing, so you have to keep your eyes open with these dirty Germans, there is everything to fear from them. I am in good health, a little tired, but today is the day we are leaving, 8 days of rest
