At least if we have to be stuck for an extra day, we’ll be doing it in cheerful surroundings! (My SIL is a designer and her defining style is COLORFUL, esp as this is a vacation rental.)

WIP whatever day it is during a holiday week, I was up at 4am writing this the other night thanks to Upper Peninsula wind. Dog park WIP is currently ascendant!
“Where’s our good girl?” Yunho calls loudly as soon as he steps in the door. Jongho looks at them over the back of the couch in time to catch Mingi rolling his eyes and pushing Yunho further in so they can actually bring their suitcases inside and close the door. Peaches, for her part, does lift her head off Jongho’s lap and thump her tail against the couch cushions a few times, but makes no actual attempt to get up. Jongho’s still petting her, after all. “Betrayal,” Yunho hisses, shoes and suitcase abandoned by the door in favor of coming over to find out where his dog is. “This is the price you pay for getting me to dogsit,” Jongho says serenely, giving Peaches a nice smoothing pat over her forehead and down one ear, always guaranteed to get her to gaze at him adoringly. “She loves me more now.”

Wrote a little something
Wooyoung shifted for the first time during Paris fashion week, which wasn’t the most convenient timing. For one thing, his schedule was measured out down to the minute for the few days he was there, and he simply didn’t have time to deal with it. For another, he wasn’t at home, with his mom there to tell him how to handle it, the way he’d always expected. To be honest, his whole family had long since assumed he would never shift at this point, and he’d mostly forgotten the childhood lessons about it he’d only half-listened to in the first place. Also, it appeared maybe where your first shift happened had some influence. Because he was not a fox. His long black tail curled around his front feet as he lifted one paw to examine it. The hairstylist who had been about to do her job blinked down at him in consternation. “A matagot?” the jewelry consultant sent over from the brand exclaimed from the doorway of the bathroom. “Oh, why did no one tell us?” She tsked loudly, appearing to take in all the arrangements in the suite. “It is no matter, I suppose. I brought all the best pieces anyway. Do not worry,” she said, addressing him directly, not seeming fazed in the slightest to be talking to a cat, “you will look magnificent today in any form.” Later, after Wooyoung managed to find human form again and change into the promised magnificent outfit (plus jewelry) and was whisked off to the show, she found fifty euro on the floor of the elevator.

Today's WIP Wednesday is from the *other* WIP I have going, and because my brain enjoys torturing me, they're in different tenses. Yes, I do go back and forth between them. This is totally fine. (Minimal context: Wooyoung is trying to unload unwanted food into Mingi's fridge.)
Wooyoung shot him big pleading eyes. “Please, Mangi-ya, they have cucumber in them, I can’t eat them myself.” “Pick around it.” “So hard-hearted!” “Give them to Sannie.” “I kiss him!” “Cucumbers are mostly water, not poison. You won’t die.” “His lips will be contaminated. I’ll know.”

Screenshot (1 of 2) of a tumblr post by user starpains: on “the blond,” “the older man,” and other crimes against third-person limited You know that thing where a story is written in tight third person limited — we’re meant to be inside someone’s head, seeing the world through their thoughts — and then suddenly the narration says “the blond frowned” or “the shorter woman sighed” about a person the POV character knows really well? That’s called antonomasia — using a descriptive label instead of a name. And it’s fine when we’re talking about strangers: “the cashier handed her the receipt,” “the tall guy blocked the door.” The POV character doesn’t know their names, and we just need a quick way to tell people apart. But the moment it’s used for someone the POV character already knows, it breaks immersion. Because that’s not how our minds work. We don’t think “the older man smiled at me.” We think “Mark smiled.” Or maybe “my boss” if that relationship matters in the moment. Third person limited means the narration sits inside someone’s perception. Their inner monologue is the story’s voice. So when you switch from “Mark smiled” to “the blond smiled,” you’ve pulled the camera away from their mind and turned it into an outside shot. If you want to create distance or irritation, you can do it on purpose — “The idiot from accounting emailed again.” That’s character voice. That’s judgment. That works. But otherwise? As soon as your POV character knows someone’s name, use it. While we do tend to worry about repetitions, names rarely register as such to the readers. If you need variety for rhythm, use relational or emotional identifiers that make sense in their head: her friend, his partner, their teacher, the person they loved. Because inside someone’s thoughts, there are no “blonds” or “brunettes.” There are only people they know.
