The whole piggyback thing with Ray and Elliott the Snowshoer was classic Irving. Described as “fooling around piggybacking” all through the novel and then, in the end, it is hugely significant. Just like “the shot” in Owen Meany. Brilliant.

First flipping thing that popped in my head as well. While there are all sorts of mitigating factors at play in the homeless crisis right now the initial nudge of the sled (here in Canada too) was the throttling of those institutions.
