Fantasy and sci-fi author, academic, freelance content writer, shark appreciator. That profile picture of a leopard seal is definitely me, don't check. Do not check.
I've done it too. I think it works when the line is striking enough to hook people and sets up an interesting idea immediately. Apparently a lot of people think it's a terrible way to start a first chapter, but to be honest it feels like it's more a case of how it's used.

Okay, fuckit, I don't need those three lines, whatever the prologue is going to be is going to make that particular magic thing clear anyway. It's fine. It's fine! It's fine. It's so fine. It's fine. It's just very fine, my dude. My bro. My guy. It's super fine. It is fine. It's fine.

I'm weighing up whether 'the reader didn't know this could be a Thing within this world' is necessarily an issue. It's in the first few chapters, it might be okay if this is where they realise the main magical conceit of the story.

To say nothing of Starmer's own party. Like, Starmer couldn't pass those cuts before. Now he wants to ally with the Tories to do it, which will basically kill his leadership stone dead by showing he can't pass legislation with one of the largest majorities in history.

Like, the Left hate them because they're needless performative cruelty that come with spiraling bureaucracy costs; the Right hate them because they see it as hurting British people instead of hurting the Right's target du jour of the moment, immigrants. But rest assured, they both hate welfare cuts.

I am, but I assumed that was just Space Sci-Fi Fungus that had no basis in real science!

I'll be honest, this does make me interested in running a Fabula Ultima game. I DM a DnD game, and one of my most vexing problems if I want the players to take initiative and push the story in their own direction, but they're largely very reactive.
