Bang!

And the dirt is gone!

We try to use the dig out method where possible - a few skilled swings of a mattock do wonders!
Taking out main root seems to be effective for long term clearance with minimal regrowth.

(We do have to use herbicide sometimes too)

Another pile of rhodo gone!

Rhododendron ponticum is native to Iberia and Caucas region (its actually under pressure in Iberia and people working to save it)!

Ireland is thought to have a cultivar "superponticum" introduced in last century or so which is cold resistant, perfect for Irish climate.

So we kindly ask that you follow and share this page to help raise awareness, let us know of any groups doing similar work and if you know of any landowners in Conamara with rhododendron on their land looking for help!

Oh, and keep an eye out for Green Drinks!

The goal is to help raise awareness, tackle the issue and work with other interested parties to help move the dial on invasive species in Galway!

If we can get it right here, we can do it anywhere!

Rhododendron ponticum is a non-native invasive plant that was introduced as ground cover for gamebirds in estates and has since caused havoc in Ireland as its toxic to herbivores and grows vigorously!

Here's a video from Cork!

Look at that wall of Rhododendron.

The only bush/tree growing up this side of the mountain in Conamara is a rhododendron ponticum.

If you don't see an invasive plant species when out in Ireland, you're not looking hard enough.

Anybody know this one?

One that is coming on to radars of more people the last while in my opinion.

A long weekend of slow work digging up regrowth from old stumps and seedlings while getting stung by bees and drenched in the odd downpour at our first site in Corr Uí Mhongáin..... mostly done here but some giant rhubarb will eventually need seeing to

Last night @hetzgonnabeme.bsky.social presented Galway Green Drinks at the Galway Climate Inspirations Festival's Giob Geab event. Each participant had 5 minutes to talk about their project, using 5 slides and mainly images. It was great learning about all the incredible work being done in Galway!

The health and integrity of a habitat is crucial to its resilience against invasive species such as Rhododendron as demonstrated by the lack of rhododendron present in this very wet blanket bog in Coill mór, Conamara vs old conifer plantation (which would have been drained). Pics from same spot

Another old woodland we last worked at last year (baile na hInse) where some of our (professionally trained) volunteers treated this monster 0.5 acre thicket of rhodo. Glad to see that about 90-95% of it is without foliage. We'll be going back to this site in September to carry out follow up work
