Earlier this summer, I visited Synthesia's London offices to be turned into a hyperrealistic AI avatar. It was unnerving and eye-opening in equal measure.
Check out my story, featuring weirdly smooth hands, addictive AI, and Ed Sheeran bad-mouthing (sorry Ed) www.technologyreview.com/2025/09/04/1...

The Substance was entertaining in a The Fly-meets-Carrie kind of way. It’s a bit uneven but it’s fun enough if you ignore the multiple gaping plot holes. Good: the soundtrack, Eric Prydz homage, Demi & Margaret are great. Bad: long, inconsistent, the final third is bonkers

From a few weeks ago but: I did enjoy The Apprentice, Jeremy Strong and Sebastian Stan are fab. Good: beautifully shot, great performances, depressing insight into the making of The Donald. Bad: forced me to think about The Donald

Adding to bad sequel pile, Paddington in Peru sadly lacks the lols and offbeat magic of its predecessors. It’s too slow, and the rotating cast of villains falls flat. Good: still better than most kids films. Bad: not enough Barry the Security Guard or Phoenix Buchanan

I’ve been on a mad cinema tear lately, so here’s what I’ve loved/suffered through:
Gladiator II is a thin act of fan service that highlights the original’s superiority in every way. Good: Denzel, the increasingly batshit battle scenes. Bad: clunky plot, undeveloped characters retreading old ground
