Remembrance Day is a good day to highlight the heroism of Corporal Francis Roy Weitzel of the Highland Light Infantry of Canada.

Weitzel was killed at the Second Battle of Buron. Many of his fellow soldiers felt his actions were worthy of a Victoria Cross.

Apparently we have a history of having military balls!

From the early history of our Regiment "Defence Not Defiance":

"The Galt Rifle Company held a military ball on 20 January 1857 at Klotz's Hotel in Preston, with Lieutenant Busby as master of ceremonies.

James Paris Lee was born in Hawick, Scotland and moved to Galt, Upper Canada in 1836 with his family.

At the time of the U.S. Civil War, Lee moved to Wisconsin where he worked on pioneering rifle designs.

He and his family returned to Canada in 1865.
