Glacial scientist & map nerd. Based in Tromsø, Arctic Norway ⛷️

Interested in research questions related to the reconstruction of ice sheets during past ice ages and how they impacted their environment.
Wow, that didn't take long to disappear!

This was one of the glaciers I visited as an MSc student in 2006.

We dropped in on Santa Claus at the north pole this week to get our wish lists in early!

To celebrate reaching 90N - the first time unaided for the Kronprins Haakon - we had ourselves a BBQ followed by a football match on the ice.

One week into the @i2b-erc.bsky.social cruise and sediment cores are coming in thick and fast, guided by some fantastic sub-bottom profiler data.

The question is, how old are these sediment layers?

An exciting expedition awaits! Our home for the next 5 weeks as we head into the frozen Arctic Ocean to collect new palaeo archives.

Still a lot of snow across northern Norway - good for spotting the locations of old ice streams 😀

The 2025 NORDQUA excursion will visit Gdańsk, Poland, 17-19 Sept.

Three full days will cover the origin and evolution of glacial landforms, sediments and lakes, as well as processes of past and present coastal hazards in the Baltic coast.

Sign up by the end of April! forms.gle/vZ4ECaVMxpfy... ⚒️

Here in Kirkenes the sun set today for the last time this year. See you again in January! 🌄

The power of ice...⚒️

Over the last 2.7 million years, ice sheets eroded ~3.7 quadrillion tons of rock from the Eurasian Arctic to create the Barents Sea we know today.

I've noticed this figure of LGM extents gets re-used quite a lot in presentations etc.

Since I was updating the map and its sources for another project, here is the latest iteration for people to enjoy ⚒️

#Methane release hotspots discovered in the central Barents Sea are releasing ~9,803 tonnes of CH4 per year into the water column

Geological and glaciological controls show how these 21,700 natural seeps are likely to continue leaking.

Polar research centre iC3 officially launches today.

For the next ten years, 50+ scientists in Tromsø, Norway, will tackle five of the biggest questions in polar science.

A unique hub of polar expertise involving UiT, NPI & NORCE. Congratulations! 🧪

It's the end of a fantastic week on Svalbard teaching the Quaternary postgrads at UNIS about ice sheet reconstruction and modelling.

It's been very inspiring to work with so many engaged students from all corners of the globe, and even the Aurora Borealis said hello.

Of all the glacial landforms in Fnjóskadalur, N Iceland, the Austari-Krókar delta is the most impressive ⚒️

Following the formation of an ice-dammed lake in the valley sometime around the Younger Dryas, glacial runoff produced this large delta, filling an 800 m-wide gap in the Ásar-esker below

This week I got to vist perhaps Iceland's best kept geological secret - the Tjörnes section ⚒️ 🇮🇸

Here 14 cycles of glacial and interglacial sediments can be found dating back to 2.5 Ma, with each sequence subsequently preserved by a cap of lava

Back in Trosmø and autumn feels closer. Plenty of mushrooms in the forest, plus some surprised reindeers on the summit of Njunnásčohkka, next to the Lyngen Alps

The Barents Sea, north of Norway, is younger than you probably think.

New topographic reconstructions show that this shelf was still subaerial around 2.7 million years ago!

Profound glacial erosion during subsequent ice ages reshaped this Arctic landscape into the marine setting we know today 🧪

Debris from WW2 still scatters the mountains around northern Norway.

Last night we came across this wreckage, the remains of an Allied plane that was shot down over 80 years ago while it was attacking German shipping in Kirkenes.
